Canine Chiropractor

My 7 month old dalmatian puppy has gotten injured playing in the yard with his littermate. It appears to be neck or back related. I've taken him to my vet to get xrays, but after 2 wks on deramax he is still off in his gait and seems to be getting worse. I've had several people suggest a canine chiropractor. I have an appt at UTCVM next week for exam, more xrays, and possible consults with neuro & ortho. I'm concerned about possible injury to growth plate in his neck or back, which could be a show ending injury.

Does anyone have experience with canine chiropractors and what is their experience~success or caused more damage or problems? Please email me privately at Coachside@aol.com. Thank you in advance!

Herding Training on Friday, June 11, 2010

Training Date For Herding

For anyone interested in herding, there will be a training session at
the Butch Davis farm in Tellico Plains (southernstockdogs.com) this
Saturday, May 29th, 2010 beginning at 5:00pm. There is a $20 stock
fee. Several ORKC members here in Blount county plan to train regularly
through the summer at Butch's place, and encourage anyone interested in
herding to join us as observers or participants. It's a great learning
experience and the dogs LOVE it!

TREADMILL- Image 925 treadmill [bought in the mid 90's]. my sister bought it for her daughter, then i bought it from her. it was an expensive treadmill for the times. i used it for myself and also the dogs. it would make a great treadmill for a dog the size of a brittany or smaller. it is still is very good condition. i dont use it because i dont have a tv in that room and it is too short for yara and i found a used jog a dog [am thrilled about that :-)). the bed is 52" X 18". over all dimensions are 69 X 24 and the control stand on the front stands 4 ft tall. it has a digital printout on the control and elevation adjustments also. i m asking $200 or best offer. let me know if you would like to see pictures.

I ran in to John Harvey which reminded me to relate what my Dad
remembers of the ORKC in the forties.

With John and Mary Harvey, Sally and Ed(?) Tirpak and Rob Carter they
put on bench shows initially. He remembers these vividly because
he and the other men would go to the Knoxville Kennel Club to borrow
the tables. These were steel tables, heavy as heck.

They went to the ring shows in part because of the trouble in moving
those things.

His other story was when they began offering dog training. At $3 they
were not having any customers. Before they gave up on the idea my Dad
suggested they raise the fee to $10. It suddenly became a thriving
business for the ORKC.

My Dad now lives in the Vanderbilt Apartments near your new space.

Here's a copy of an amendment to one of the many dog-related bills in the Legislature this year. Please look at it, and if you have any thoughts about it, send them directly to Jon Cole. Be sure to identify yourself as an ORKC member.

Also, the commercial breeders bill continues to work its way around the various committees. Please contact your legislators to express your opinion on this bill. Phone calls probably work the best, as they seem to be ignoring emails and letters, particularly if they don't support their current position.

SUMMARY OF AMENDMENT (006310): Deletes all language after the

enacting clause. Defines "vicious dog" as any dog that has attached a person,

without provocation, causing serious bodily injury. Broadens the definition of

"violent felony" to mean any felony involving the use or attempted use of force,

violence, or a deadly weapon; a violation of controlled substance offenses,

promotion of methamphetamine manufacture, or initiation of a process

intended to result in the manufacture of methamphetamine; or a violation of

cruelty to animals, cock and animal fighting, intentional killing of an animal,

aggravated cruelty to animals, or a criminal offense against an animal. Creates

a new Class A misdemeanor for a person convicted of a violent felony that

occurs on or after July 1, 2009, knowingly to own, possess, have custody of, or

reside in a residence with a vicious dog until 10 years after the person has

been released from custody or active supervision. Creates a new Class A

misdemeanor for a person convicted of a violent felony that occurs on or after

July 1, 2009, to own, possess, or have custody of a dog that is not microchipped

for permanent identification or is not spayed or neutered and is older

than 12 weeks of age.

Training Facility

Last Friday, Teresa and I stopped at the training facility to pick up
the equipment for the show. I found the heat on in both buildings and
all of the windows open in the east building. The office light was
also left on in the east building. Today, I received a call from Joe
McDonald who had taken the signs back to the facility this morning.
Joe informed me that the front gate was standing wide open when he
got there. He thought that someone had been working and left to get
something, so he left the gate open. When I found out, I was lucky
enough to find Bill Moore at home and he went down and closed the
front gate.

As we all know, there is a day care just outside our gate and we MUST
be responsible and make sure we keep our property secured. We have
thousands of dollars in equipment that could never be replaced and we
would be held responsible if someone were injured on our property and
it was not secured. Also, it has been raining cats and dogs lately
and the windows have to be kept closed. We have posted check lists in
both buildings and we all need to make certain that our property is
left in a safe and secure condition. We also need to make sure every
light, fan, heater and water is turned off before leaving.

I also found the top tray of the tool box sitting on the table in the
kitchen area. These tools were purchased for the members to use as
needed. Please place the tools back in the tool box after you finish
using them so we can keep track of them and they will be there when
we need them. We all need to be responsible for keeping our facility
safe and secure.

with the way ticks attach.

Ticks attach by biting into the skin and then secreting an organic
glue called
cementum to hold themselves in place. Their jaws are actually pretty
weak--they
can get through skin but they don't have the strength or energy to
hold on for
several days! When they are done feeding, they regurgitate a bit of
their
stomach contents in order to dissolve the cementum holding them in
place. So
when the tick is detaching from the host voluntarily is when they
usually
infect their host with whatever they are carrying. The other way
ticks infect
their hosts is if another being squeezes the tick's body, which
mechanically
forces the stomach contents into the host.
So, all those methods that rely on getting the tick to detach
voluntarily? Bad,
bad, bad, bad, bad! Don't do it! If you smother them, irritate them
or burn
them (the three most common suggestions), the very first thing the
tick will do
is disgorge some stomach contents to dissolve the cementum, which is
exactly
what you want to avoid.
The reason I like the tick spoon is that it does not put pressure on
the tick's
body. The V-shaped notch in the bowl of the spoon slides against the
host's
skin and tends to peel off the cementum, which allows the mouth parts
to come
out cleanly. And when the tick is detached, there it is in the bowl
of the
spoon ready for disposal.
So, what if the mouth parts get left behind? No big deal. Keep in
mind that
there is often a little localised irritation from the bite, which is the
anticoagulant that the tick uses to keep the host's blood from
clotting. If the
mouth parts get left behind, they are tiny and the body easily takes
care of
them the same way any tiny splinter is taken care of: a little
inflammation and
the various components of the skin work to reject the foreign body.
If you're worried, put a little antibiotic ointment on the spot two
or three
times a day for a couple days, until the spot looks normal.

Commercial breeder bills

Dear Tennessee Federation of Dog Club members,

I am writing to you as one of the list owners of Tennessee Pet-Law.
We've been following the status of the Tennessee commercial breeder
bills, HB386 and SB 258, very closely. Those of us who are active on
Tennessee Pet-Law oppose these bills for the following reasons:

*Legislation promoted by the Humane Society of the United States has
invariably sought to lower the numbers of animals kept by breeders,
regardless of the number that is passed in any initial legislation.
This bill may begin with 20 intact bitches but in the future that
number will be lowered until it affects every hobby breeder. HSUS
has tried to pass legislation in other states this year that would
allow breeders to keep only 3 or 5 intact bitches.

*This bill had no stakeholder input from actual commercial breeders.

*The sponsors of the bill have stated repeatedly that the standards
of care required, and the kennel requirements, for this bill will be
USDA requirements. These will be impossible for hobby breeders to
meet. Dogs will not be allowed to whelp in the house and puppies
cannot be raised in the house under these requirements. These are
engineering standards that were defeated on the federal level in U.S.
Court of Appeals (DDAL vs. USDA) and in PAWS. HSUS is now trying to
have them implemented at the state level.

*The fiscal note for these commercial breeder bills is based on
inaccurate assumptions about the numbers of so-called "commercial"
breeders in the state. The data was collected by perusing newspaper
and Internet ads. We have this information from Senator Jackson's
office and from the HSUS state director. This is inaccurate
information and there is no indication of how many of these breeders
are a) one-time breeders who would not require a sales tax ID; or b)
breeders who already have a sales tax ID and are already paying taxes.

As you can see, there are many problems with these bills which have
not been relayed to the legislators.

We are currently asking which clubs within the TFDC are still
members. We are sending the information to the AKC and to our
legislators. We would also like to know your club's position on the
commercial breeder bills. As we understand it, several clubs have
reversed their support for TFDC's position on these bills.

These are important matters, as you know. We appreciate your help in
coming up with the most accurate information so we can share it with
the AKC and with our legislators.

Take the Lead

It has come to my attention that there is a very special organization that was formed in 1993 by Breeders, Judges, and Competitors called Take The Lead. When this Organization hears of a life threatening situation of a fellow Breeder/ Competitor, it is willing to help out. Perhaps the ORKC already knew of Take the Lead, I did not until recently on the Dalmatian members list , a well known member’s husband fell seriously ill after just recently losing his job. It looked like this breeder was about to lose her home and dogs until Take the Lead stepped in. Please look at the website at www.takethelead.org . Mother Bed Comes to Life and More

Many thanks to Jack Ramsay and his usage of his Kubota tractor on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25. Jack used the backhoe attachment to dig out the bed along the east building, spread the fill dirt in low areas on the property and backfill the bed with good soil from our storage pile. This was a big job and Jack's help was a huge back-saver in laying the foundation for our landscape. Hats off the you, Jack!!!

Also, many thanks to my sweet hubby, Wes, who shoveled the fill dirt out of the bed and assisted me all day Saturday, the 25th.

This bed needs to settle and dry out before planting in perennials (flowering plants that come back every year). It is likely to need more soil after settling. I will check it weekly and let you know when planting can begin. Please choose plants that are 3-4' tall at the most, heat and drought tolerant, and require full sun. Over time, some plants will prosper and some will not. They may get rearranged, divided, used elsewhere on the property, or given away, so please bring your donated plants with this in mind. Examples are: butterfly weed, catmint, coneflower, coreopsis, daisies, daylilies, garden phlox, lavender, red-hot poker, any salvia, santolina, sedum, and yarrow, to name a few. I am looking forward to seeing what folks have to share and the colorful greeting it will provide for members and visitors alike.

Additionally, the entry bed outside of the gate was finished using Knockout roses "Radazz", blue star junipers, yellow exotic daylilies from Laura Riester, whirling butterflies gaura, homestead purple verbena, Helen von Stein lambs ear, and moonbeam coreopsis. Rhapsody in Pink crape myrtles are in the back of the bed and the nanho blue butterfly bushes were removed for rehabilitation/composting. Oh, well!

Also, the third willow oak was located and planted with considerable amendment done to facilitate much needed drainage. Memorial markers will be made soon. These giants will provide cool shade in the coming years.

Exclusive: PETA's Pet Killing Program Set a New Record in 2008 Public
Records: PETA Found Adoptive Homes for Less than 1 out of 300 Animals

Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade's worth of proof that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to "put down" 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.

PETA's "Animal Record" report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.

Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.

Why would an animal rights group secretly kill animals at its headquarters? PETA's continued silence on the matter makes it hard to say for sure. But from a cost-saving standpoint, PETA's hypocrisy isn't difficult to understand: Killing adoptable cats and dogs – and storing the bodies in a walk-in freezer until they can be cremated – requires far less money and effort than caring for the pets until they are adopted.

PETA has a $32 million annual budget. But instead of investing in the lives of the thousands of flesh and blood creatures in its care, the group spends millions on media campaigns telling Americans that eating meat, drinking milk, fishing, hunting, wearing leather shoes, and benefiting from medical research performed on lab rats are all "unethical."

The bottom line: PETA's leaders care more about cutting into their advertising budget than finding homes for the nearly six pets they kill on average, every single day.

The Virginia Beach SPCA, just down the road from PETA's Norfolk headquarters, manages to adopt out the vast majority of the animals in its care. And it does it on a shoestring budget.

Years of public outrage has not been enough to convince PETA to eliminate its pet eradication program.

Now the death toll of animals in PETA's care has reached 21,339, including more than 2,000 pets last year. That's not an animal charity. It's a slaughterhouse.

John and Barbara Byrum have donated a flag pole to ORKC and we will
try and get it installed in the near future. If anyone has a flag
they would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. We will
have to locate the flag pole fairly close to one of the buildings so
we can run electricity for lighting. It would also be nice if we
could incorporate a small flower bed around the flag pole. Any
suggestions?

Fellow ORKC members,

I have been keeping a close watch on the new legislation concerning the "Commercial Breeders" bills. My position is that there are too many ambiguous clauses in the laws leaving holes in these bills which put honest caring breeders at jeopardy should a bias HSUS/PETA type person be given the responsibility of enforcing the laws. Additionally, I don't think it's fair that a small percentage of honest breeders be taxed to pay for the mistakes of puppy mill offenders. Lastly, I know it is HSUS's goal to see all breeding of companion animals stopped. I don't think they will stop pushing until they achieve their goals. They will continue lobby to lower the numbers (example, 20 breeding females...) until they have achieved their goal. 20 breeding females was just their starting point.

Because of the anti-HSUS information ORKC has circulated, (I'm on the same page with you!!!) and because HSUS is behind these bills, I was under the impression that ORKC was also against these bills. I spoke with someone in class the other day who told me ORKC was part of an organization that has a Lobbyist working to defeat these bills. I was trying to find out who this person is so I could work with them. I mentioned it to the members of TN-PET-LAW@yahoogroups.com. Below is a copy of the dialogue, with the exception of my original question which was basically, "does anyone know who the Lobbyist is?" (please read the dialogue below)

If you are apposed to these bills and feel they need major changes to adequately protect dog owners, please contact the Lobbyist to find out what he/she is doing that gives others the impression that they are working WITH HSUS in support of the bills. If the Lobbyist is truly trying to protect both dogs and owners, I would like to know how I can contact him/her so I can support their efforts.

The Federation lobbyist and the HSUS state director and the ASPCA
lobbyist are the only ones we know of who are officially working on
the bills. They're all supporting the bills and the HSUS state
director claims she was the author of the original version of the bill.

Unless the Federation has changed their position and they are now
opposing the bills their lobbyist is pushing for the commercial
breeder bills. I believe they are still supporting the legislation.
However, I don't know what amendments they may be trying to get to
the bills. The Federation has not been very good about communicating
their position. I don't think even some of their member clubs know
what the Federation's positions are.

I'm honestly not sure who the Federation is using for lobbying. I
think it was a lobbying firm in Nashville but I don't recall who the
individual is.

Join the Crusade against HSUS+Pass It Forward!

One of the fastest methods of marketing used to quickly gain other participants, which can be exponential in breadth and scope –is by using levels of people. Just pick out say 10-50 as an initial goal, and all you do is forward this article. That's right. This is just to inform people of the truth.

Many pet owners or fanciers, business owners or community people have tons of friends and others who would like to KNOW the truth. People who want to buy a dog. People who don't know about HSUS.

Make sure to tell THEM to do the same thing with 10-50 emails. This is VITAL. Do not spam people. Either send to someone you know, or post it online somewhere (blog, forum, newspaper blog replies, Kijiji forum, wherever...) This is for education purposes. HSUS hires telemarketers. We don't need to hire telemarketers because we already have enough people.

We have way more people than HSUS does. Especially if each person does what is stated above. If you know anything about math, (exponential power) you can see that we can get millions of postings and emails. And when millions of people know, they tell others. That is how Obama got a lot of people to vote. Email and posting online.

You know how rumors get started and end up as "urban legends?" Well, we are going to make this one a non-urban legend about HSUS. Bad news travels so fast online, it can take the place of 100 news broadcasts because so many people see it AT THE SAME TIME. HSUS is like Peta— but with the Political Push. And HSUS has far more $$$ than Peta, since it merged or swallowed up a bunch of other animal groups.

And it was done PURPOSELY–so they would have more corporate money and get into more political situations—which in many cases—create greedy scandals involving buying off politicians, as we have seen daily in 2008—the year of corporate greed going wild.

Is this what we want? Animal extremists with huge corporate coffers to buy off politicians? To take donations from innocent people and then make laws against our animals? To stop the breeding of good pets? To ruin the agriculture and pet industry? Beware–because it is here–and that group is the corporate conglomerate known as HSUS+friends!

For 2008, HSUS pushed 10 goals…6-7 of the 10 goals involved spay/neuter, dogs/cat laws, or farm animal laws. One other goal was to increase media exposure and another to involve Venture Capital (to make more $$$)…only ONE goal involved outside issue (seal hunting, Canada) Much of the laws HSUS pushes is against dog kennel owners of all types, dog owners, and dog breeders, regardless of size or type. HSUS loves to pretend that every dog breeder is a high volume business, yet HSUS pushes for laws against even small hobby breeders. In other words, HSUS says one thing, but does another.

HSUS in 2008, attempted to pass a forfeiture law in CA so that alleged dog raids could garner additional forfeiture proceeds. And we all know HSUS loves to help orchestrate kennel raids of all types, small dogs, big dogs, etc…..The state did not pass the legislation; they tried to pass it in Tennessee, and that also did not pass…. and now it seems HSUS closed its Western Regional office in Sacramento, CA December 2008 and laid off everyone, but one person. Hmmm….maybe the California legislature has had enough of HSUS???

HSUS like PETA, spends $$ to try and both devalue the production of certain food sources, to cause the public to think badly of agriculture/ farm raised animals; eliminate the use of animals in biomedical research labs; phase out pet breeding, esp. for dogs, end the breeding of purebred dogs; end zoos, and circus animal acts; and demonize hunters as crazed lunatics. HSUS employs fulltime attorneys that do nothing but file lawsuits; it is not disputed that HSUS does not believe pets are our property, which is why they advocate for treating animals on same level as people. Guardianship is NOT ownership.

In 2005 Pacelle announced the formation of a new "Animal Protection Litigation Section" within HSUS, dedicated to "the process of researching, preparing, and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal court."

[Note: What this really means is HSUS becomes involved in LEGISLATION aimed at stopping the selling of pets, notably dogs; HSUS puts videos on mainstream TV and then tells the public to donate, while saying HSUS is busting dog kennels--but behind the scenes, they are advising cities to implement sterilization of all pets, no buying, no breeding of animals, and forced adoption of shelter animals, not buying from stores; HSUS attempts to help pass laws pushing MSN, forfeiture of dogs, and restrictions of pets including no tethering, etc]

2000………….HSUS uses convicted felon, avowed member of Animal Liberation Front (ALF), JP Goodwin (2008)–Goodwin is claimed to be an "expert" in dogfighting by HSUS, however when in court to testify as such, the court found he was NOT an expert. He may have experience being in prison, but he's not an expert on dogs. Come on people, would you donate or give money to Scott Peterson who threw his wife in the Bay while she was pregnant? Of course not. So why would anyone want to donate to a group that hires felons? That fundraises for felons?

HSUS is responsible for helping Louisville KY come up with the draconian pet laws now the subject of a federal lawsuit (2008), in which the COURT denied the amicus briefs of HSUS TWICE (in other words, the Court refused to allow it to be filed) And WHY did the court twice DENY the briefs?

One reason is because, HSUS used one of the same attorneys which was formerly representing one of the parties—that is considered a conflict of interest!! You call that ethical??? Hardly. Which is why the court refused to allow it, but HSUS spent lots of $$ on attorney fees to keep trying to file it, again and again! [See other posting on petdefense blog which gives specifics on this ordinance by typing in Louisville on search box on petdefense]

HSUS submitted to the Denver Fed Appellate Court this year (2008) an amicus brief claiming that dog breeds can be identified with 99% accuracy without bothering to explain such "accuracy" is only considered to be for entertainment purposes, not scientifically used as a reliable test at this stage (for breed)– due to the testing being in infancy stage. HSUS also submitted an amicus brief on the R. Stevens case, and Stevens was found not guilty in a precedential case on free speech issues (2008.)

HSUS is going around the country offering $5,000 for info leading to conviction of "dogfighters" and has purposely helped/ engaged in orchestrated raids of large and medium kennels of dogs, killing ALL the dogs upon seizure, even when the court verdicts led to acquittal of the owners. HSUS has bragged about taking down dog people and made a big deal of it, yet after 3-4 years, the accused are aquitted quickly but their dogs were killed right after the raids. This is becoming a pattern for the HSUS, which is NOT a legal enforcement team. Thought HSUS was about "saving" animals? Think again.

HSUS solicited donations for the Vick dogs when they did not HAVE custody of such dogs–but implied that they did!! In fact HSUS wrote letters advocating the dogs should be killed. Soliciting donations for dogs one doesn't have amounts to fabrication. Lying.

HSUS purposely engages itself with local humane society groups so that HSUS can be involved in KENNEL RAIDS of small dogs, with the intent being that all such dogs will be seized and taken. HSUS often uses Best Friends, ASPCA, Last Chance for Animals and the like, to help out. No charges of abuse or gross neglect need be filed, in fact in one case, it was set up to seize the animals by saying there was an "environmental" violation of putting dog urine in the river. HSUS then broadcasts such RAIDS across the United States, and then helps groups sell the dogs the week following the RAID.

HSUS purposely has "merged" with other large AR groups (Doris Day, etc) so they can take over the advocacy of AR issues in all areas (legislate, advocate, lawsuits) and WP admitted, they intend to push hard in several areas, including legislation and gaining donations. Just looking at the huge list of corporations owned by HSUS above, do you not see the potential for harm? Do we need to become victims first like in the mortgage business? Do we need to lose our rights before fighting this cancer?

Unless you want to become a nation of tofu burgers on the grill on the 4th of July, unless you DO NOT want a choice as to where your next purebred dog comes from...it is way past time to wake up and JOIN THE CRUSADE.

The following 12 Step plan was published in 1987, when the concept of Animal Rights was as foreign as fuzz on a frog's ***. Look at this list VERY CAREFULLY. ( Over the coming weeks, The Endangered Owner will look at each of these steps individually, so check back.)

Each and every item on that list is being attacked by PETA and the HSUS. And for all of you pet owners out there that STILL do not believe the Animal Rightists want to end ALL PET BREEDING, read item number 10.

Shelter Scams

Did you ever get mail from the "humane society"? Donation solicitations, Christmas cards, free address labels? Was it from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the American Humane Association (AHA), or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)? Did you ever wonder who they are and what they do? What about during disaster relief efforts, did you ever wonder where to send your donations?

Don't know the answers to these questions? You are not alone. Even among the most dedicated dog lovers there is huge misunderstanding and confusion when it comes to our nation's shelters and the SAS – that is, the Shelter Alphabet Soup, that comes with them.

In the late 1990's, a group called the California Coalition of Animal Advocates convened to try to find answers to issues dog-related population issues. Their work included a study to find out who and where the animal shelters were in America. It sounded easy enough until they discovered that a national list of shelters did not exist, and, contrary to popular opinion, there wasn't a "humane society" or any other type of organization that oversaw all of America's shelters!

So who, what, and where are the nation's shelters? Who are these big fund-raising groups, and how are they related to shelters? Where do they get their money, and who is running them? To start, the coalition funded a study to create shelter list of every shelter in America. They knew it would always be changing and would never be complete, but they also knew it would be a lot better than what existed, which was nothing. They hired university graduate students to do the only thing that would work – the students called every town, municipality, city, village, township, hamlet and county in America and asked if they had a shelter, what they called it and who ran it. The answers were interesting and the list was compiled. Today, there is still no national organization overseeing or coordinating America's shelters.

Here are some facts that most people do not realize.

The Humane Society of the Untied States (HSUS) does not operate a single animal shelter inAmerica or anywhere else. That's right, not one. Makes you wonder how many people send them money thinking they were the local animal shelter.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) does operate a shelter and an animal hospital - they are both in New York City. That's it, a New York City shelter only. It is a highly regarded shelter, but New York clearly isn't the nationwide shelter list some people think of when they think of the ASPCA. To be fair, the ASPCA does humane work all over the nation, but as far as operating shelters, well, no.

The American Humane Association (AHA) operates no shelters, but does have about 300 shelters that are affiliated and agree to maintain AHA standards of care at their shelters.

What about the SPCA? Is there a national organization called the SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals)? Nope. Sorry. "SPCA" is simply a term, or abbreviation, used for most any animal shelter but it is NOT a nationwide organization. It's a generic for what we say instead of "dog pound", "animal shelter", or "humane society".

Now you can see the confusion! When national groups use words like humane society, or letters such as SPCA in their name, people think they are giving to their local shelter. But they, of course, are not.

So who runs the local shelter in your town? It could be anyone from volunteers, to your local government, to a private party. Many rural areas simply have a person, with a few extra kennel runs, who the town pays to house the strays. In more populated areas where actual dedicated buildings exists, the shelters are funded by any combination of tax dollars, donations, adoptions fees and dog license fees. (It is interesting to note that the shelters house dogs and cats, but since hardly anyone licenses cats, the dog license fees pay the bills for both dogs and cats.)

These shelters are named anything from the "SPCA of Whatever County" to the "Humane Society of Whatever Township", but are not affiliated with either national group, the ASPCA or HSUS. Within a county or state, the shelters may meet for educational purposes or to share information but not as a member of a national fund raising group that operates and fund shelters.

So what does the ASPCA, HSUS, and AHA do with all of their money if it is not going to your local shelter? Each has their own agenda. They all advertise, use money to raise money, and draft and lobby for legislation. Some may agree with none, all, or some of what they support. The AHA has the contract to oversee and ensure the safety all animals used while filming a movie. They have done so for years and have done an admirable job. However, they are also opposed to hunting. So are the ASPCA and, obviously, HSUS. Do they help protect animals? Yes, they do. But does their agenda agree with your individual ideas and philosophy? Hang on, you better check. Check a lot. Go to their websites. Call them. Dig deeper into their agendas. See what legislation and advertising campaigns they are spending donated money on.

HSUS for example, in addition to the troubled PAWS legislation, is also spending donations on a new campaign to prevent America's youth from hunting before they are 18 years old. (For those familiar with the PAWS bill, this is typical HSUS – set limits first then adjust them to extinction!) These campaigns and laws are often being funded by well intended people who think they are giving to their local shelter! But you now know that is not true.

With Hurricane Katrina, watch the big PR money being spent by some of these groups, and other dog organizations, as they exploit the hurricane victims by trying to raise money that goes who knows where. Is that money all going to relief? Let's hope so. We have heard that good money is starting to get spent in the hurricane ravaged areas. Or is some going to fund anti-hunting and anti- breeding legislation? It almost seems as though where some see despair and horror, others see a PR opportunity, so who knows?

The bottom line is that there are thousands of shelters in America, all of which are individually operated and funded locally. They always need resources and support. Then, there are large groups who raise money by using the goodwill of words like "humane" and "cruelty" in their national name. To add another layer of concern, while your local independent shelter is not run by HSUS, AHA, or the ASPCA (unless you are in New York City), you really have no idea what the mission of your local shelter is. Your job is to ask.

There are many, many excellent and worthy local shelters that need your donations and will use them directly to help dogs. But before you open your wallet, ask what will be done with your money.

Consider donating food and supplies which can't be as easily used to pay government lobbyists. Ask what they believe in. Then ask yourself what you believe in and where you draw the line. We should and we must help those less fortunate. We must not forget the people and the dogs who need help from the hurricane. We must do so from our hearts, though, and not to take credit or exploit the situation. And we must make sure our efforts are in line with our private individual beliefs.

There are some nasty HSUS backed bills in Tennessee that need to die. So,

on Monday, April 13, 2009, get ready to CALL, FAX, or at the very least

email the committee members (as well as your own rep) to send the strong

unified message that we are OPPOSED to these bills. The ARs do this all the

time...They stage call-in days and bombard the lawmakers with calls/faxes.

WE must do the same!

Animal Forfeiture Bill, HB 0626, will be heard Tuesday, April 14, before the

House Calendar and Rules Committee

Bill Summary: In animal cruelty

prosecutions, if a defendant is ordered to post court security to pay for

expenses of caring for the animal, s/he currently has 15 business days to

come up with the money. If s/he can't do that the ownership rights are lost.

This bill will change the time limit to 72 hours, which is very little time

considering that the person will also need to find money for an attorney and

bail, and the amount of money required for the security is likely to be

considerable.

The bill will also remove the following wording: " However, if the person

from whom the animal was seized is not the owner of the animal and the

person has not posted the court-ordered security within fifteen (15) days,

the court shall order the governmental animal control agency or the humane

society to make all reasonable efforts to determine who the owner of the

animal is and to notify the owner of the pending proceeding. No animal shall

be deemed to have been abandoned and forfeited to the governmental animal

control agency or humane society until reasonable attempts to determine and

notify the owner have been made."

This wording gives rightful owners an opportunity to reclaim pets that have

been stolen or otherwise ended up in the hands of an (alleged) animal

abuser.

The take home message here is that both of the above-mentioned changes will

make it easier or more likely for an innocent person to lose his/her

animals. They also could result in overzealous prosecution and/or abuse of

process. More information concerning the problems with asset forfeiture

Innocent people DO get accused of animal abuse, and, unless they are

wealthy, they will almost certainly lose their animals and go bankrupt while

defending themselves. As our legal system is based on "innocent until proven

guilty," it would be better to have the person reimburse the costs if and

only if found guilty.

Second, I am writing you each to encourage your Parent Club to go forward with writing their letter to AVMA and to share it with the rest of us.

Repeat of my email of March 16th:

The delegates from the Crop Dock meeting asked me to give them a series of "talking points". They felt this would give them the confidence to go forward with their Boards and write their own letters.

My talking points are:

Only write about what you know. If you are "docking", write about docking. If "cropping", then write about cropping.

Do not make up fantasy arguments that do not pass the common sense test or would be rejected by your members for their own use. Historical arguments that utilize settings and conditions rarely encountered in today's world are fun, but in reality, they boil down to the breed image of the dog today (see below).

The basic argument for everyone is that docking and/or cropping is inherent in the breed and intrinsic to the identity of the breed. Undocked or uncropped dogs leaves undesirable dogs that do not fit the image of the breed. For Rottweilers, the breed is an outdoor-farm dog that has been domesticated and brought into the home. The undocked tail is a large thick appendage, which specializes in clearing tables and beating on you, your children, and your visitors with authority.

The above example can be crafted to any specific breed, but needs to utilize both the specific tail and the physical traits of the breed. Example, little spindly tails can be characterized as easily broken or injured.

For docking. A key element needs to be a direct attack on the credibility of AVMA for raising issues about docking puppies at 3 days of age. For a scientific organization, where is the science? Where are the studies? It must be nice to pontificate on the world from an ivory tower without doing the research. Every docked breed and all of the related breeders can testify to the lack of negative impact from docking to the puppies involved. Where is the evidence to contradict the evidence of 1000's of litters each year? What about the cumulative evidence of the last hundred years?

DECIDE FOR YOURSELF! COMMERCIAL BREEDER LICENSE -- GOOD OR BAD?

We agree that breeders who keep animals in filthy, inhumane conditions should be punished. We also agree that breeders who sell unhealthy pets to potential owners should be punished. There are, however, already laws to address both issues, as evidenced by all the recent puppymill busts. We do believe, however, that the standard of care used to protect animals in Tennessee is low and needs to be raised.

The proposed Commercial Breeder License is undesirable for the following reasons:

Let's call the alleged "Commercial Breeder License" bill what it really is -- a BACKDOOR mandatory spay/neuter law. It does what all mandatory spay/neuter laws do, it infringes on your right to own and breed, it just takes a more convoluted path to get there. It does not start out forcing all owners to spay/neuter their pets, only those who possess or maintain twenty (20) or more unsterilized adult female dogs or cats in Tennessee for the purpose of the sale of their offspring as companion animals. It is still spay or pay - the motive behind all mandatory s/n laws.

The proposed bill, creates a new class of criminal - anyone who owns twenty (20) or more unsterilized adult female dogs or cats in Tennessee. You will be left, if you are innocent, to "prove" your intent was not to sell. The reality is that, as every proponent of the law has so eloquently said, "Why would anyone have over 20 unsterilized animals unless they were breeding to sell?" That is presumption of guilt on their part and only serves to illustrate that, if you are innocent and changed under the proposed law, proving your innocence will be a difficult, expensive (probably over $5000 at a minimum for legal services and boarding fees if animals are confiscated) proposition.

Mandatory spay/neuter and breeder licensing laws are currently being proposed all over the Country. This is a deliberate, well-planned, coordinated attack on responsible breeders by philosophical extremists. Unable to successfully target owners with mandatory spay/neuter laws, these extremists are now targeting breeders directly. They do so by alleging that there is a need for additional legislation to protect consumers and animals and it, happily, will increase revenues for the enacting entity. That is all smoke and mirrors! What they are doing is and remains promoting of plank 10 of the extremist animal rights' platform: "Stop any further breeding of companion animals, including purebred dogs and cats.. . . .Abolish commerce in animals for the pet trade."

Further evidence of animal rights extremists' hands on the proposed bill is that it reads that if you are a "Releasing agency" defined in the proposed law as a pound, animal shelter, humane society, animal welfare organization, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, or other similar entity or home-based rescue that releases companion animals for adoption" you CANNOT get a commercial breeder license! In other words, if you breed "commercially," whatever that means, you cannot rescue. Why? Animal rights extremists don't want breeders to be able to "legitimize" (in anyone's mind) themselves by rescuing. What happened to their mantra, "Don't breed if you don't rescue?" The goal is no possibility of positive PR for breeders, responsible or not!

The proposed bill unreasonably lumps true commercial breeders, puppymillers, and individual breeders who have an extended breeding program together. This will further confuse an already confused public as to whom is or is not a good source for pets.

Breeder licensing limits the sources available to potential owners, making it more likely they will have to turn to large scale breeders whose focus is on financial profit rather than producing quality pets. Like all mandatory spay/neuter laws, it promotes the "adopt one until there are none" push of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), who by the way has worked on and is lobbying for the proposed law.

Breeder licensing will NOT protect animals from the inhumane conditions that exist in (puppy/kitten) mills. Tennessee already has animal protection laws to address puppymill conditions. A breeder license will just allow the government's "camel's nose" into heretofore private property, i.e., your home.

Breeder licensing will NOT protect consumers from less scrupulous breeders. Tennessee already has consumer protections laws -- incorporating such laws by reference into a breeder licensing law will do nothing to increase the protection such laws provide.

Breeder licensing will NOT increase state revenues nor will it provide the funds necessary to support a new bureaucracy to enforce the law. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports only 27 breeders and/or dealers are registered in Tennessee, although the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) requires them to register. Twenty-seven (27) breeders and/or dealers will NOT generate the funds necessary to support a new bureaucracy. What will they do to support it? Lower the number that triggers the requirement to be licensed? Raise the license fees? Neither is good for breeders or pet owners.

Most breeders will not comply with a breeder licensing law. In fact, where similar legislation has been enacted, the blowback is that fewer people license their pets increasing animal control-related costs generally and the potential for rabies outbreaks, a human-health concern.

Breeder licensing will NOT make those who currently do not "pay their fair share" (of what?) pay their "fair share." If a breeder does not report his income to the federal government, and pay applicable taxes, it is not logical to assume he will comply with additional state or local laws.

Breeder licensing will create an unfunded, expensive, bureaucratic nightmare for the State of Tennessee.

Breeder licensing sill increase the cost of pets, thereby, limiting their availability to potential low and fixed-income owners and the public generally.

Article 1, Sec. 21 of the Tennessee Constitution states, "No man's services or property taken without consent or compensation. That no man's particular services shall be demanded, or property taken, or applied to public use, without the consent of his representatives, or without just compensation being made therefor. Title 1, Chapter 3, §§1-3-105 states: ""Personal property" includes money, goods, chattels, things in action, and evidences of debt;" Part of the value of your "chattels" rests in its ability to reproduce, thus, the proposed law is in violation of the Tennessee Constitution. Don't let your "representatives" deprive you of your rights, oppose the proposed Commercial Breeder Licensing bill!

And, finally, one of the most ludicrous arguments we have heard to-date for this commercial breeder law is that the "attorney general wants numbers." He probably wants a raise too. So what? Who cares? Your elected representatives are supposed to represent your interests, not those of some government employee no matter what his title may be.

Contact your state legislators (State Representatives and Senators) and express your objections to SB0258 and HB0386, a.k.a., the "Commercial Breeder Act". SB 258 Update

SB 258 has been amended, but only to remove the "good moral character" clause. Otherwise, HSUS is getting virtually everything it wanted. Last weekend, the TN Fed of Dog Clubs met, and along with the AKC, signed off on the bill. My personal opinion is that it should be scrapped entirely. There has been much discussion of this on the TN Pet Law group, and the general feeling is that we should continue to oppose this law. OPPOSING THE PROPOSED STATE COMMERCIAL BREEDER ACT

PROPOSED TENNESSEE COMMERCIAL BREEDER ACT -- There is an alternative
that accomplishes the same goals without penalizing or potentially
penalizing responsible breeders

The stated intent is "to ensure the humane treatment of companion
animals used in commerce and to protect consumers from purchasing
unhealthy companion animals sold in commerce." Unfortunately, at
present, it does little or nothing to address either issue in any
meaningful way. You are asked to accept "the standards, rules and
regulations as are lawfully prescribed by the commissioner" whatever
they may be and the bills merely incorporate by reference existing
Tennessee Consumer Protection Law to address consumer protection. Jon
Cole told me that the State Attorney General "wants" numbers. Okay,
not that what he wants matters because it is your, the citizens of
this state, opinions that matter; however, he can have is cake, we
can give him numbers without penalizing anyone in advance with
additional taxation and/or regulations.

SB0258/HB0386 are supposed to address puppymillers. Responsible
Animal Owners supports legislation that can reasonably be expected to
address the horrific conditions in puppy mills. This legislation does
not do that. Instead, it creates a new bureaucracy, unreasonably
restricts free trade, and unfairly penalizes those who are most
likely to be responsible. Puppymillers are currently ignoring
existing animal cruelty laws, which need strengthening by the way, do
not pay income taxes on their income, and, in all likelihood, are
violating numerous other laws related to running a business to
zoning. Does anyone really believe that merely adding another law
will make them change their evil ways?

The Humane Society of the United States has campaigned hard for this
bill as part of a nation-wide campaign to promote either or both
mandatory spay/neuter laws and breeder licensing laws. You don't have
to look hard to realize they are engaged in a full court press to
demonize all breeders, including responsible breeders various
nationally recognized and respected kennel clubs.

Yes, a few minor concessions were granted to the Tennessee Dog
Federation; however, basically, it is the same bill as originally
proposed. The changes were insufficient. This type of legislation is
being defeated in other parts of the Country? You do not have to
accept it here.

Here is Responsible Animal Owners of Tennessee's proposed
*alternative* wording to the current "Commercial Breeder Act" bill.
It addresses every concern that the current draft purportedly
addresses without breeder licensing or infringing on the rights of
responsible breeders. It does not create a new bureaucracy or
penalize responsible breeders with additional "taxation" and/or
regulations. I am advised that having a number is important to those
currently supporting SB0258/HB0386, this one uses the same wording re
numbers without creating problems for the Fancy. Look it over, and if
you think it a more desirable alternative, please contact the bills
sponsors listed at the end of this email.

The follow is proposed as a substitute in its entirety to the current
draft legislation, i.e., SB0258/HB0386: Amend Senate Bill House Bill
No. __________ by deleting all language after the enacting clause and
by substituting instead the following:

SECTION ____________. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 44, Chapter 17,
is amended by adding the following as a new part ____:

SECTION ____________. This part shall be known and may be cited as
the "Commercial Breeder Act".

SECTION ____________. The purpose of this part is to ensure the
humane treatment of companion animals used in commerce and to protect
consumers from purchasing unhealthy companion animals sold in commerce.

SECTION ____________. As used in this act, unless the context
otherwise requires: (1) "Adequate food and water" means food and
water which is sufficient in amount and appropriate for the
particular type of animal to prevent starvation, dehydration, or a
significant risk to the animal's health from a lack of food or water;
(2) "Commercial Breeder" means any person, association, partnership,
corporation, or any other organization or entity; that maintains
twenty (20) or more unsterilized adult female dogs or cats in
Tennessee for the purpose of the sale of their offspring solely as
companion animals as opposed to the sale of animals to be used in any
type of sanctioned conformation or competitive event(s); (3) "Person"
means any person, association, partnership, corporation, or any other
organization or entity; (4) "Humane care" of animals means, but is
not limited to, the protection from temperature
extremes, adequate heat, ventilation, sanitary shelter, and wholesome
and adequate food and water, consistent with the normal requirements
and feeding habits of the animal's size, species, and breed; (5)
"Companion animal" for the purpose of this act means dogs and cats,
and shall include puppies and kittens. Companion animals do not
include any wildlife regulated by the Tennessee wildlife resource
agency or livestock; and, (6) The following shall not be considered a
"Commercial Breeder" under this act: (i) A veterinary hospital or
clinic by a licensed veterinarian; (ii) A boarding kennel operated
solely for the boarding of animals; and, (iii) Any government or
nonprofit 26 U.S.C. § 501(c)(3) corporation, pound, animal shelter,
humane society, animal welfare organization, society for the
prevention of cruelty to animals, or other similar entity or home-
based rescue that aids animals in need and
subsequently makes said animals available for adoption; and, (vi) Any
person engaging in any sport or show activity involving animals.

SECTION ____________. It shall unlawful for a Commercial Breeder to:
(A) Make substantial misrepresentations or false promises in
connection with the sale of a "Companion animal" under this act;
(B) Make misrepresentations or false promises through advertising,
salesmen, agents, or otherwise in connection with the sale of a
companion animal under this act;
(C) Fail to provide proper facilities and care for companion animals
under this act.
(D) In addition to any other penalty provided by this act, a
violation of subdivision (A), (B), or (C) constitutes a violation of
the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act of 1977, codified in Title 48,
Chapter 18. For purposes of applying the Tennessee Consumer
Protection Act to this section, a violation of this section shall be
construed to constitute an unfair or deceptive act or practice
affecting the conduct of any trade or commerce, subject to the
penalties and remedies provided in such act.

SECTION ____________. A Commercial Breeder pursuant to this act
shall: (1) Keep a breeding kennel in a good state of repair, in a
clean and sanitary condition, adequately ventilated, and disinfected
regularly as needed; (2) Provide adequate clean, accessible, food and
potable water; (3) Provide adequate and humane care for any companion
animal at such facility including such medical attention necessary to
maintain the animal in good health and pain free; and, (4) Take
reasonable care to release for sale or trade only those companion
animals that appear to be free of disease, injuries, or abnormalities.

SECTION ____________. It shall be unlawful any person to ship any
companion animal into, out of or through this state for the purpose
of resale unless such companion animal is accompanied by an
interstate or international certificate of health and a licensed
veterinarian has visually examined such animal.

SECTION ____________. (a) The provisions of this act shall not apply
to any person who raises, keeps, or maintains animals solely for the
purposes of food or fiber production. (a) It is the legislative
intent that nothing in this act shall change, modify or amend, in any
way, any Title 70 fish and wildlife provision or any rule and
regulation or proclamation promulgated pursuant thereto, nor shall
this act apply to or interfere with any conduct or activity permitted
or regulated pursuant thereto such as hunting, fishing, possessing,
taking, killing, eating, or capturing fish and wildlife. (b) In no
way shall the provisions of this act apply to normal and customary
agricultural practices, such as breeding programs, research
facilities or the production, marketing and/or disposal of farm
animals, livestock or exotic animals, including, but not limited to,
poultry, fish, shellfish, or any other agricultural
commodity produced in the state. (c) The provisions of this act shall
not apply to activities or conduct that is prohibited by §§ 39-14-203
and 39-14-204.

SECTION ____________. (a) For a first violation of the provisions of
the Commercial Breeder Act, a Commercial Breeder shall be charged
with a Class C misdemeanor. (b) For a second violation of the
provisions of the Commercial Breeder Act, a Commercial Breeder or
person shall be charged with a Class B misdemeanor. (c) For a third,
and subsequent, violations of the provisions of the Commercial
Breeder Act, a Commercial Breeder or person shall be charged with a
Class A misdemeanor. (d) In addition to (a), (b) or (c) above,
Commercial Breeder shall, on conviction, also be responsible for
attorneys' fees and costs incurred by the state for any filings
relating to violations of this Act.

SECTION ____________. In addition to the remedies provided in this
act and notwithstanding the existence of an adequate remedy at law,
the enforcing agency is authorized to apply to the chancery court of
the county in which a violation of this act is observed for an
injunction or restraining order. Such chancery court shall have
jurisdiction and for good cause shown shall grant a temporary or
permanent injunction or an ex parte or restraining order, restraining
or enjoining any person, partnership, firm, corporation, or other
entity from violating and continuing to violate this act or any rules
and regulations promulgated pursuant to this act. Such injunction or
restraining order shall be issued without bond and may be granted
notwithstanding the fact that the violation constitutes a criminal
act and notwithstanding the pendency of any criminal prosecution for
the same violation.

SECTION ____________. If any provision of this act or the application
thereof to any person or circumstance is held invalid, such
invalidity shall not affect other provisions or applications of the
act which can be given effect without the invalid provision or
application, and to that end the provisions of this act are declared
to be severable.

SECTION ____________. For the purposes of promulgating rules and
regulations this act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the
public welfare requiring it. For all other purposes this act shall
take effect _________________, 2009, the public welfare requiring it.

Lex's Cataract Surgery - He's Home!

Hey Everybody,

Lex's cataract surgery at UT went very well. They had no problems putting in the implant lens, and he had no complications during/after surgery :)

I picked him up this afternoon, and boy, is he ever feeling sorry for himself! I don't think he hurts, but he hates the Elizabethan collar and refuses to move. When I could get him to move, he mostly knocked things over. Within the first 5 minutes of being home, both kitchen chairs, the garbage can, and his x-pen were all on the floor. He has also "punished" me by running into me with that collar every chance he gets. OUCH!

I finally got all his eye drops put in, fed him, and managed to get him in his crate. It's a 48 inch one but he can't turn around with the collar on, so that took some effort. Luckily, he'll be day-boarded at the regular vet's office for the next 2-3 weeks, so they can do his eye drops during the day, and "baby-sit" him to make sure he doesn't get that collar off. As I expected, keeping him still and quiet for the next couple weeks is going to be a challenge. They said no neck collars since that can increase eye pressure, so I'm using his tracking harness (and he knows to PULL in it!). Anybody know a good chiropractor for me? LOL

I can't tell much about his vision yet, mostly due to the disorientation he's having with the collar. Maybe in another few days, it will be more obvious as he adjusts to being in the collar. He did eat well and has learned to dip his head accurately for the water bowl.

Oh yeah - they shaved around his eye so he looks kinda like a raccoon! Marina is not too sure about him and kept her distance (course with chairs and garbage cans getting knocked over, she's probably smart to stay far away!).

At least there are lots of b-ball games for me to watch this weekend while I baby-sit him!

Clean Up After Your Dogs Please

The staff of Girls, Inc. has witnessed ORKC members walking their dogs on and around the softball fields and allowing them to relieve themselves. In the next few days, they will begin using these fields and we do not need them stepping or sliding in dog poop. PLEASE do not to walk your dogs on the Girls Inc property, not only the softball field but the area around the armory, too.

Also a gentle reminder that ORKC is a self-care facility - if your dog makes a mess anywhere on the property, it is your responsibility to pick up after your dog. There are 2 fenced exercise area for this purpose, each equipped with pooper scoopers and receptacles.

Senate Bill 258, sponsored by Sen. Doug Jackson (D-25) and House Bill 386, sponsored by Rep. Janis Baird Sontany (D-53) places breeding of purebred dogs under criminal animal cruelty statutes. The bills classify a Commercial breeder as any person who possesses or maintains twenty (20) or more adult female dogs in whole or in part for the purpose of the sale of their offspring as companion animals. If even one litter of puppies is produced, a commercial breeder licensing would be required. Ownership of 75 is the absolute limit. Background checks will be required for applicants, and the state will determine if the applicant is of good moral character and deserving of the license.

HSUS State Director, Leighann McCollum, responding on behalf of Sen. Doug Jackson confirmed that USDA regulations currently in effect under the Dog and Cat Dealer Act (44-17-101) will be required for the new commercial breeder kennels. Senate Bill 258 was referred to Senate Committee Commerce Labor & Agriculture Feb. 19; no hearings are scheduled at this time.

Many pet owners are unaware that Tennessee state law does not require annual rabies boosters. Both Buildings Painted! Cleanup Day Next

We got the West building painted on Saturday and we did the second
coat touch up today. We also have cleaned up the outside of the
buildings by removing the old wires, vines, patching some of the
holes and touching up the paint. Both buildings have been
straightened up and the East building has been completely cleared of
all the clutter and neatly stored in the metal building.

We now need to clean up the buildings from all the construction, to
get ready for Spring session starting. If anyone can come out and
help vacuum, sweep, rake, mop, clean windows and the restroom, please
plan to be at the Kennel club on Saturday between 9-12.

It is thanks to the efforts of our volunteers who come out to work
days, that our Training Center continues to improve!

Robert has several volunteers to help paint THIS Saturday - March 7 - so we're trying to get the West building in shape to paint. Besides daytime painting, we will need volunteers to clean up after painting later in the afternoon.

There is also some light painting touch-up painting to do in the East building, and the trim needs to be painted as well.

Robert will be working this weekend trying to finish getting the buildings ready to paint if anyone wants to come and help. The large windows in the East building are close to complete with just a small amount of priming that needs to be done. The large windows in the West building need to be sanded and then primed. Valentines day work day was productive even though only 3 of us
showed up! We got the big doors scraped in the East building (thanks,
Carrie!) and just need a little more prep work on the buildings to be
ready to paint. We still need to fill in the holes with concrete
patch, prime and paint the moldings. The floors/mats had their mid-
session cleaning so everything is fresh for Tuesday's classes!

Carlotta is right and I cannot stress urgently enough how important it is for dog/cat owners, breeders, trainers to send FACTS to your legislators to counter the myths and downright lies they will hear from HSUS.

HSUS is very dangerous because they are covert on their mission, unlike PETA who broadcasts everywhere that pets should be eliminated.

In case you weren't aware, we have an HSUS state lobbyist in
Tennessee now. So, if you breed or show dogs, this person is working
in Nashville to get to know your state officials and to put forth the
HSUS agenda. I know that probably makes you feel just great,
especially since they are anti-dog breeder.

It would be a great idea if all of you try to touch base with your
own state representatives and senators to make sure they know where
you stand on dog issues. Tell them that you are opposed to increased
breeder regulation and licensing. Tell them that you oppose things
like mandatory spaying/neutering and breed specific legislation.
Tell them that you're a responsible person who votes and you're a
good breeder. You are not the way that HSUS tries to portray you.

Whether you breed, show, have hunting dogs or you're involved with
dogs in any other way, the things that HSUS is doing in our state
will affect you. So please contact your representatives and let them
know how you feel about it.

PUPPY

Puppy – This class is for puppies three months to no more than 20 weeks old on the first night of class. Puppies learn how to meet and interact with other dogs and people. They also learn a few simple commands. This is a four week class.

Prerequisites: Puppy's age must fall within course description. Puppies must have had their second round of vaccinations.

Super Puppy – Class is designed for puppies five months to eight months of age (depending on size). In this class, puppies will learn basic obedience skills, such as sit, down, and come, as well as basic manners.

Prerequisite: Puppy's age must fall within course description or they must have recently completed the puppy class.

CONFORMATION

Conformation Handling/Drop-In – This class is for those who wish to show their dog in the conformation ring. Students learn different gaiting patterns, get stacking tips, handling tips, ring protocol for both breed and group rings, and socialize dogs for the show ring atmosphere. Instructors are experienced show handlers. This is a drop-in class, pay as you go.

Prerequisites: Student should be familiar with basic show ring protocol and how to present their breed of dog.

Beginner Conformation – This class is for those who are just getting started in the show ring. Handlers will learn how to groom and present their dogs, how to enter a dog show, basic ring protocol, AKC rules and "what to expect when you get there". Instructors are experienced show handlers who have started puppies and finished champions.

Prerequisites: Dog must be leash trained. Puppies must have had their 2^nd set of shots.

RALLY

Novice Rally – AKC Rally is a relatively new dog sport that is a stand alone fun event for both dog and human, as well as a successful stepping stone from the AKC Canine Good Citizen program to the world of obedience or agility. Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. The canine team moves at their own pace, very similar to rally-style auto racing. Rally was designed with the traditional pet owner in mind, but it can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition. Rally Obedience is fast-paced, challenging, and loads of fun. You'll learn the 31 Novice exercises, utilizing heelwork, fronts, and finishes, and also perform some courses.
Prerequisites: Beginner, CGC or equivalent

Rally Advanced/Excellent – This course is for dogs that have completed the Beginner/Novice Rally class or equivalent. You'll learn the 20 Adv/Exc exercises, as well as continued work utilizing attention and heelwork, fronts and finishes, and stays. We'll introduce jumps and backing and longer stays. For those interested in competing, we will work exercises in Novice, Advanced, and Excellent levels including entire course run-throughs.

Prerequisites: Novice Rally or instructor permission

OBEDIENCE

Beginners – This class is for puppies over 6 months of age and adult dogs. (NO dog is too old to learn manners!) Features sit, down, stand, stay, come, polite leash walking, socialization and confidence building. Also problem solving techniques and much, much more.

Prerequisite: Dog must be over 6 months of age.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) –

This class is for those who would like to earn an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title on their dogs. The CGC title can by earned by any dog, regardless of whether or not they are purebred or registered with the AKC. This class will teach handlers to train their dogs to pass the 10 individual tests for their CGC title. The club will provide an opportunity for all handlers and their dogs to take the test after the completion of the course. Dogs learn good public manners, obedience to commands during distractions and to accept being handled by someone they don't know. This class is designed for those owners who are interested in continuing to work with their dogs past the Beginner class level, as well as those who are interested in doing therapy dog work.

Prerequisites: Beginner course or equivalent. Dog must be over 8 months of age.

Pre-Novice – This class will help lay the foundation for competitive obedience and rally showing. Skills such as attention, fronts, finishes, stands and stays will be taught.

Prerequisite: CGC or equivalent

Novice – This class will help prepare you and your dog for obedience competition. All Novice exercises will be covered, as well as footwork, common dog and handler errors, and rules and regulations.

Prerequisite: CGC or equivalent

Open – This class teaches the basic Open level Obedience exercises and helps the dog-handler team refine their performance in preparation for showing in the AKC Open Obedience class. The instructor will attempt to work with each student at the student's level. Dogs must be able to work off lead. Handler must bring a dumbbell to class.
Prerequisites: Dogs must have earned the Companion Dog (CD) title or have the instructor's permission.

Introduction to Utility – This class is intended to introduce portions of the Utility exercises to the dog and handler. Skills introduced will include the moving stand, call to heel, signals, go outs, directed jumping and scent articles. Complete exercises will not be taught, only the skills necessary to begin the dog's utility training. Dogs must be able to work off lead. Handler must bring utility articles and gloves to class.

Prerequisites: Dogs must have earned the Companion Dog (CD) title or have the instructor's permission. Dogs should also have a reliable retrieve command.

Utility – This class teaches the basic Utility level Obedience exercises and helps the dog-handler team refine their performance in preparation for showing in the AKC Utility Obedience class. The instructor is available to teach inexperienced exhibitors how to train the advanced exercises, but the more advanced students generally help each other and act as "stewards" and "judges" to give each other formal or informal run-throughs. Dogs must be able to work off lead. Handler must bring utility articles and gloves to class.
Prerequisites: Dogs must have earned the Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title or have the instructor's permission. Dogs should also have a reliable retrieve command.

We'll have a WORK DAY on SATURDAY JAN 3 to prepare for the start of winter classes which is TUE JAN 13.

Our JANUARY CLUB MEETING will be held on THURSDAY JAN 8 at the HARRIMAN EXPO CENTER. This meeting is going to serve double duty - club business and help set up for the AGILITY TRIAL JAN 9-10-11.

A list of agility trial "volunteer duties" is posted in the NOV WOOFER. This list will also appear in the JAN WOOFER.

The next BOARD MEETING will be held on WEDNESDAY JAN 21 at the Training Center.

Sincere apologies to anyone who showed up at the Soup Kitchen for the meeting on Thursday. I know there were at least 3 of you. Apparently Editor was to osmote that there is traditionally no club meeting in December. Being that I thought last year was special circumstance due to all the work days getting the new facility up and running. But this I now know, and FYI in case you didn't also know there is traditionally no club meeting in July, and also there's no club meeting the month we have our annual picnic. This seems a little arbitrary to me but I don't make the rules, I just try to follow them once I learn them. Hopefully the Board, at the January 21 meeting, will establish a 12-month calendar of set dates for 2009, as Editor has respectfully suggested.

Another Beloved Pet Dies At Grooming Salon

Although this is difficult to write, I wanted to go ahead and share the story of our beagle's death. Our dog, Moxie, was a healthy five year old Beagle; she loved to bark at walkers, lie on our front porch and have her belly rubbed by any and all visitors. She loved our three children and just enjoyed her life. On Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I called Happy Tails (a grooming and boarding business located on old Ebenezer) to see if they could give her a bath. We were planning on lots of family on Thanksgiving at our house and knew Moxie would be in the middle of it. She has been boarded and bathed there when needed for over five years. I dropped her off at 12:30 PM and paid in advance because my 16 year old son was picking her up on his way home from Bearden High School. He arrived at around 4 PM and was told that she would be ready in a few minutes. Af ter waiting around 10-15 minutes, the owner, Eric Webb came running through the lobby with our dog in his arms and told my son to follow him to his father's office. My son, a licensed driver of two weeks, followed Eric from their business, past our vet's office and traveled another 10 minutes to his father's office, Dr. Carlos Webb, Rocky Hill Animal Clinic. They traveled at a high rate of speed and our son was distraught and confused as to what was occurring. After arriving at the office, our beagle was pronounced dead by Dr. Webb. The explanation was that she had a seizure and died after being dried from her bath. Our son called my husband and me on our cell phones and we arrived as soon as possible (about 20 minutes). The owner's wife, Sarah, did not call us even though she had all our information. They also did not use our vet listed on our emergency form. The owner, Eric, said he did not call because he was "busy, trying to save your dog's life". The only discussion at the vet's office while we were all still in a state of shock was whether to cremate or have the city pick up our dog. They also discussed the associated costs. We agreed to cremation around 5 when we left the office.

The next morning, I visited our veterinarian to discuss the situation. She immediately requested the body be released to her staff. After first denying that they had Moxie they called back to confirm that they were mistaken and she could be picked up. Dr. Frazier, Northshore Animal Clinic, delivered her to UT for an autopsy. She confirmed that Moxie had no history that would indicate a seizure, etc. It was only after being notified by Dr. Webb that we had her picked up, that we received a call from Eric to see how we were. He assured me repeatedly that there was no foul play and that she died of natural causes. He also offered to pay to buy us a new dog, any breed we wanted. The results of the autopsy were a shock to us all. The cause of death was determined to be heat stroke and blunt injury trauma. She had three cracked ribs and her liver was lacerated and had bled into her stomach in an amount that would cause death. Until we can investigate further, we will not know exactly what occurred at Happy Tails. All I know is that we miss her terribly and find it hard to understand why she had to endure such a horrible death. It is a difficult situation to explain to our children.

I have promised our children that her death will not be in vain and that we will do all we can to share her story and hopefully prevent others from suffering a similar loss. After our tragedy I researched on the computer about Happy Tails and was shocked at the other stories. You can google it and read those for yourself. I can only ask that you do not utilize Happy Tails for any services for your pets, even something as simple as a bath. Also, please check out and ask for recommendations for any services for your pets. I never thought this would happen and always felt safe leaving my pet in their care. Sod installation

David Miller and I have discussed the pro's and con's of trying to install the sod before spring. We both feel that the recent rain and now the extreme cold is not in our favor. There also is some fill in work that needs to be done on the dirt before we begin laying the sod. Therefore, we have decided to wait until spring to install the sod. This is a very expensive project for the club and we do not want to chance losing this much sod due to the weather conditions. We will keep everyone informed when we are going to have a workday to rake down the agility field area.

FOR PARTIES WITH DOGS:

Musical Chairs - People & dogs heel around the chairs. When the music stops, handler must put dog in a sit stay and then handler gets in a chair. If dog breaks stay, handler must reposition before claiming chair. last handler without a chair is out... UNLESS a dog breaks a stay before the music starts, then first dog to break is out.

Pet tricks contest - judged by applause at end.

Best kiss contest - Best dog kisses given to handler during 30 second opportunity, judged by applause at end

Egg in a spoon relay race Handler must also maintain dog in heel position while carrying egg in a spoon down and back and hand off to next hander/dog team. Can get really interesting especially if the dog WANTS the egg ;)

FOR PARTIES WITHOUT DOGS:

Each year our obedience club has a party and we also play games. The host of the party would ask each group of people seated at a table (team) to name as many breeds of dogs that started with a certain letter.

For instance, the letter B

Basenji
Beagle
Border Collie, etc

The team that came up with most AKC breeds starting with a B would win.

It was fun and we all learned new breeds!

Landscape Soil Delivery

The soil for the entry bed and a reserve load were delivered on Friday, November 7th. The shaping of the bed will be finished soon, followed by installation of the woody plants for this important landscape statement for the ORKC property. When finished, it will welcome members and visitors and draw your eye to the entrance. Any able bodied person who would like to volunteer some occasional time doing a variety of jobs (some stronger than others) please contact me.

We are just spreading the dirt today and we will not have a workday this weekend. If the weather holds, we plan to begin laying the sod next Friday and finish on Saturday. I will put out an email to the members.

BUILDING THE AGILITY FIELD

Hi Everyone:

It has been brought to my attention that I should resend the email with a more precise subject line and I am doing so. We have had 25 truck loads of topsoil brought into the property so that we will be able to construct the agility field. To do this, the board has approved the purchase of 20,250 squard feet of Bermuda sod for the surface. Robert Herrell has volunteered to use his tractor to spread the dirt and we will rent a small Bobcat to help with the installation of the sod. This sod is very expensive and we will have to work in a very tight timeline. The sod comes in 108 foot rolls and needs to be installed within 3-4 days. After that, the sod will begin to grow together and rot.

Once we get the soil spread and compacted, we will spread fertilizer and lime across the entire surface. We can then use the Bobcat to help lay the sod in place. We will need volunteers to help pull the seams tight and make cuts. We will also need volunteers to help spread the fertilizer and lime. After the sod is put in place, we will need to water it and I have purchased two water sprinklers that will cover 89 square feet at a time. This is the most important and costly project we have undertaken so far at the property and we really need volunteers to help out. Please let me know if the dates of November 7,8,& 9 or November 14, 15 & 16 are dates we can plan this project. This will not be very strenuous work and we can always use help to provide refreshments to the workers. Please contact me if you are able to help. Thanks.

Farmer's Market

Charlotte, Your Post is not too late. Thank you so much for the reply and most of all the information. On several of the accounts you have written regarding instances at the market, I do know them to be true. There were, on several Saturday’s, quite a number of dogs at the market. I couldn’t say if it was 10 or 12. Also, I must say that there were quite a few dogs on Flexi-Leashes and it is true that some owners did not watch what was happening with their dogs. That said, I did not ever see someone tripped. I should also say that I really do not agree with using a flexi leash in a situation like that. You are correct it is very unfortunate that a few spoil it for the masses. You know it’s funny. Our children were not always perfect in public but they were never banned from somewhere like the farmer’s market. We corrected them just as we correct our dogs who do not always have perfect behavior. For that matter, I do not always behave absolutely perfectly in public although I try very hard to be correct and considerate of others. It does seem in this case, however, it’s not the dogs that had the behavior that caused a problem it was their owners.

Farmer's Market

I'm sorry this has taken so long, but if anyone is still interested I
talked with Bill Byrne who is the president of F.A.R.M. Bill said
that flexi leashes were a problem. Some owners were inattentive to
their dogs and people were tripping. Also, a dog owner and a non dog
owner exchanged some words. He also said that the F.A.R.M. market is
not allowed to have dogs/pets. A couple of the vendors said that at
times there were 10 or 12 dogs there. I got the feeling that they
really did not want dogs there although one of them sometimes brings
her "grand" dogs to market.

Bill however, is a dog lover and thinks more of dogs than he does
most people. I told Bill that ORKC members wanted to know what they
were doing wrong so they could correct it and that I don't know any
members that use flexi leads: most certainly not in that manner.

I understand that the gentleman with the nice English Sheepdog was
there with his dog after the September 6 deadline and that he walked
his dog through the market making remarks that his dog was not
causing a problem. I also noticed a lot of dogs in the square at the
breakfast with the farmers on the third Saturday in September.

Dogs are also not allowed at the OR flea market (on school property),
but most Saturdays you can see people shopping with their dogs and
sometimes people even have dogs for sale there.

It looks like a few people spoiled it for all which sometimes
happens. I don't like that way of thinking one bit, but I don't know
what to do to change it. Maybe someone else does.

Dogs enrich my life so much that I feel like it is their loss not mine.
